With Ford focusing all of their attention on bringing the new F-150 pickup to market for 2015, it’s no surprise that they are shelving a special edition street performance for now. It has been announced that the 2014 Tremor will be the last of this edition until further notice. It is a helluva a great truck, however, and — if it appeals to you, I suggest that you place an order soon or you will be left out.

I have driven the Tremor twice — first at the Texas Outdoor Writers Association conference where Ford made it available to journalists, and last week for a full ride/drive experience. Both times left me wanting more, although I must admit that I can only have limited love for trucks with regular cabs. It seems to me that any truck with a base of more than $38,000 should seat more than two. With the options that turn it from an F-150 to a Tremor, not including destination and delivery, this package — gorgeous and capable as it is — tops out at more than $45,000. That’s a lot of dough for a truck that won’t move the family.

That said, the Tremor was a terrific drive and it will do pretty much everything that an owner could ask of it. If you love the Raptor, it is likely that you will love the Tremor. It is ‘in your face’ and striking and wherever I took it, people stopped and asked what it was. This is not a truck for the perpetual wall flower.

This is first and foremost an F-150 in either the 4×2 or 4×4 configuration with a short wheel base standard cab only. The only engine/transmission combo available is the impressive 3.5L EcoBoost GV6 mated to a 6-speed automotive electronic transmission with tow/haul mode. The combo delivers 365hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque through a standard 4.1 electronic locking rear end. This is the shortest final drive ration offered in an EcoBoost F-150. The truck has a tow capacity of 7,700 lbs. which meets most sportsmen’s needs. No need to shout, the Tremor announces that it is a powerful baby down to the road with 20-inch black wheels and Pirelli Scorpion STR P275/55R20 tires.

Inside and out, this truck looks dangerous. Exterior graphics, particularly on a vehicle like the race red one I drove, are dramatic and the coordinated interior in black leather with red stitching is both comfortable and exciting. This is the only regular cab F-150 offering a flow-through center console and bucket seats. Brushed metal accents and a red-stitched steering wheel also speak to style.

Other standards include a 6.5-foot box on a 126″ wheelbase, 26-gallon fuel tank, fog lamps, removable tailgate, running boards tow hooks and wheel lip moldings. There is a 4.2″ LCD screen cluster, single zone air conditioning, black carpets and bucket seats with 6-way power on the driver side, cruise control, leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel SYNC with MyFord Touch and satellite radio. This is the improved infotainment system with an interface designed to accommodate truck users who may be wearing gloves.

In a performance vein, the Tremor includes 4-wheel disc brakes, 12V power outlet, 110V outlet, electronic locking rear end and electronic 4×4 shift-on-the-fly, SelectShift transmission, Hill Descent Controll/Off Road Mode, Hill Start Assist, skid plates, trailer sway control and trailer tow package on the 4×4.

Before you send me comments, I know this is not the truck for everyone. It is bold and flashy. At the same time, for someone who wants an extraordinary sport truck with a regular cab, this could be just right for you.

I do wonder what Ford will do with special editions like the Tremor; and with the well-loved and respected Raptor, which I consider to be the only mass produced off-road pickup which doesn’t need modification. With the introduction of the new all-aluminum F-150 for 2015, we’ll have to wait for future announcements.
