Supersonic Bullet Crack [Video]

In demonstrating suppressors I find lots of folks don’t realize how loud a bullet traveling through the air is. Anything about roughly 1,050 fps breaks the sound barrier same as a jet or lightning.  This results in a supersonic crack that is quite loud.  We don’t realize this most of the time because we are uprange and the firearm’s report disguises the bullet’s supersonic crack.  I set up a camera a few years ago downrange at 400 and nearly 600 yards.  Listen closely and you can hear the rifle’s deep report in the background almost a second after the bullet cuts through the balloon.  And you aren’t hearing the balloon at all, that is all bullet.  It’s a lot different than the movies:

  1. If a picture is worth 1,000 words then is video worth 1,000 pictures? The video really is informative. I learned something today, thank you Dustin.

  2. Frankly, I’m surprised that YOU’RE surprised. Ask any veteran and he’ll tell you in a New York Minute that you never worry about the ones you hear–what kills you is the one that you DON’T hear!!! And if you hear several, the bad guy is looking for you but hasn’t found you–yet.
