Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino brought the city’s bombing case into the national gun debate yesterday, pushing to close a so-called “terror gap” in federal gun laws, and questioning how Tamerlan Tsarnaev got a gun–which had nothing to do with the bombing..
“Right now there are thousands of people on terror watch lists who are considered too dangerous to fly on a plane, but when it comes to buying an assault weapon — no problem. It’s crazy,” Menino said.
Menino, who co-chairs Mayors Against Illegal Guns Bloomberg, wants action on two bills now before Congress that would bar people on watch lists from legally buying guns.

“This is just another effort to capitalize on a tragedy to advance a policy that wouldn’t have prevented the tragedy it is capitalizing on,” said Glenn Reynolds, a University of Tennessee law professor who blogs at Instapundit .com, noting the Tsarnaev brothers were not legal gun owners.
“What Menino and Bloomberg want is a secret list compiled by bureaucrats that takes away people’s constitutional rights without due process.”
