New York Fire Department EMT Brendon Hernandez wrestled a gun away from a patient who grabbed a cop’s gun and shot him in the foot outside Harlem Hospital.
Police arrested Mr. Idore, and EMTs Hernandez and and Jean Altidor transported him to Harlem Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
When they arrived at the Hospital, the officer in the ambulance began to remove Idore when he tried to flee.
Both cops, identified by the NYPD as John Chiodi and Fausto Gomez, grabbed Idore and were on either side of him to walk up the ramp into the hospital.
“I just kept telling him, ‘relax, relax,’” Altidor said, who remained in front of the cops and patient.
Idore calmed down for a bit, but then began to struggle again.
Although he was handcuffed behind his back, he was able to grab one of the cops’ gun and fired the weapon twice, striking Gomez one time on his left foot.
EMT Hernandez saw the struggle in the ambulance’s rear-view mirror.
“I ran over, froze for a second, then just grabbed the gun,” Hernandez said.
