The owner of a Milwaukee tavern who fatally shot one of three men trying to rob the bar tried to save the man after shooting him.
Andy Kochanski says his first instinct was to shoot the masked men who barged into the Concertina Beer Hall early last Friday waving guns. He says his second instinct, as a former firefighter, was to perform CPR on the man he had just shot.
Twenty-three-year-old Carmelo Matoz-Arzola later died of a single gunshot wound. Court documents say the weapons two of the men carried were BB guns. But, Kochanski says they looked real to him.
The bar owner made a post on his Facebook page hours after the fatal shooting, writing “I would like to state that I did what I had to do to protect my customers and myself. I have no regrets and would do it again if need be. PLEASE do not let this keep you from having a great time here. PLEASE do not let this tarnish this neighborhood. This could and has happened anywhere.”
“You should ALWAYS feel safe here,” Kochanski wrote.
