German joy was short-lived after a police operation to rescue a squirrel with its head stuck in a man-hole ended in tragedy.
However according to German news sources, it is believed the small creature, who scurried off after being rescued, died from stress shortly after its ordeal.
‘We wanted to take him to a vet’s for a check-up,’ said one of the officers.
‘But he was having none of it. He legged it straight away into a garden and up a tree …’
It narrowly avoided becoming road kill after one motorist was forced to slam on his brakes after nearly running over the trapped animal.
The concerned German resident notified police of the situation, with officials quickly coming to its rescue.
Police had little success as they attempted to pull him free however, struggling for over 15 minutes to release him.
The squirrel was eventually freed after one resident assisted with a bottle of olive oil after police had lifted up the troublesome man-hole cover.
However the joy was short-lived after a local resident found the squirrel had died from stress two hours later.
