A Prairie View man in his early 20s drowned in the Brazos River Monday afternoon near the Highway 159 bridge southwest of Hempstead.
Officials from Waller and Austin counties and other state agencies are dragged a section of the river for several hours before finding the body. The victim’s name has not been released by Austin County law enforcement pending notification of next of kin. He is believed to have drowned while swimming with a small group of friends. He reportedly dove under the water and never surfaced again.
Distraught friends were frantically scouring the river around 4:30 p.m. when emergency crews arrived. Searchers on shore and in three boats dragging the water were engaged in the search for nearly four hours before finding the body.
Sheriff, fire, and EMS personnel along with state troopers and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials were involved in the search. No other information has been released at this time.
