A shooting range and gun store has canceled a two-day contest to see who could kill the most coyotes in New Mexico.
Will Hogsett, general manager of Calibers Shooters Sports Centers in Albuquerque, said the range received too much hate mail after news of the contest spread.
The story spurred an outcry, leading organizers to scrap the hunt, which was open to all New Mexico residents.
Local hunters advocated the contest as a way to cull the growing coyote population.
The grand prize was a pair of Bushmaster AR-15 rifles.
Calibers received angry calls and emails from people in San Francisco, Miami, and Texas.
