With the cooler temperatures arriving in late October the bass bite on the San Marcos River accelerated.
Actually, I had fished the river during the previous six months very little. Reason? My fishing partner, Mike Schlimgen, had been involved in a six month long fly fishing tournament on Hill Country streams and lakes above I-35. I paid my entry fee and joined the tournament but quickly dropped from the contest. I fish very little above the interstate and realized I didn’t want to put the time into the contest on strange waters that would be necessary to be competitive.
Dove season, early teal season, coastal fishing and fishing the San Marcos River would all have to move to the back burner.
But Mike fished the tournament with dedication and gusto. He won first place and a new Kayak. More about that later.
Mike’s involvement in the tournament took him off our home river. Therefore, I didn’t fish our river much. But now the tournament was over, Mike was back on the San Marcos with me and the bass were biting.
