Linda Wilmoth is taking extra precautions around her Clatsop Plains property these days.
Nearly two months have passed since losing one of her goats. She found it one afternoon, lifeless with puncture marks around its neck. Her husband, Paul Wilmoth, said, “They looked like they were made by a scalpel.”
Paul Wilmoth was a big game hunter in Idaho and the marks around the neck brought to mind one suspect.
“Cougars will not get into a stomach,” he said.
They called the Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division and sent pictures of the goat and tracks to wildlife biologists with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The Wilmoths worry about the safety of others in the area. They have three acres near Cullaby Lake. Parks are nearby and Linda Wilmoth said people frequently walk their dogs in the early morning. There have been no reported sightings of a cougar in the area, according to Tim Schwartz, of the OSP Fish and Wildlife Division who investigated the goat’s death.
