Police in Louisiana tracked a man accused of stealing drugs from a pharmacy because he left behind a pickax he used to break in—and forgot to remove the price tag.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Col. John Fortunato said the sticker included a bar code, which the store computers used to record when and where the pickax was bought. The store also had video of the purchase.
An investigator checked with the store, which found video surveillance footage of the man as he bought the pickaxe, as well as a 10-pound sledge hammer.
A store owner near the pharmacy contacted the investigator and showed him video surveillance footage from the night of the burglary. The man who bought the axe and hammer appears in the footage around the suspected time of the break-in.
Fortunato said the investigator obtained a license plate number for the vehicle driven by the suspect seen in the second store’s footage. He then linked the vehicle to Rodrigue.
