For the first time in a long time, mountain lions have killed and eaten a dog in the Jackson area.
Cheney, a 12-year-old black Lab, met his end in his backyard last Friday near the Gros Ventre River, owner Dan Cook said.
“The problem is he was too trusting,” Cook said. “He probably went over to sniff them and it didn’t go very well.”
Although Cheney’s death was not witnessed, Wyoming Game and Fish Department employees, who tried to trap the suspected killers, confirmed that the dog was killed by mountain lions.
“It absolutely was mountain lions,” Game and Fish large carnivore biologist Mike Boyce said. “It’s a female with two large kittens.”
