Sheriff deputies and game wardens in Burke County, Georgia, have arrested two men on grave robbing charges.
Investigating officers said 39-year old Jerry Atkinson had been hiding in a home and disguising himself as a woman to keep a low profile. Investigators received tips that the suspect was hiding in a home belonging to 44-year old James Ralph Morris, who was arrested for harboring a fugitive.
The first suspect in the robbery case, Ralph “Bubba” Hillis, was arrested on April 23.
Investigators tied the men to an eerie scene 120th American Legion Post commander Roy Bell Jr discovered as he was tending grounds at the Old Church Cemetery in Burke County.
“I stopped and looked and I could tell that someone had excavated the grave,” Bell said. “I went ahead and called the sheriff’s department and by the time they got here we’d already found four more.”
After finding dismantled body parts all over the cemetery as well as more disturbed graves, deputies concluded it was more than mere vandalism.
