Due to heightened precautions issued by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries regarding the processing and dressing of wild hogs, the Hunters for the Hungry Processor Program will no longer be accepting wild hog donations effective immediately.
Serological surveillance conducted by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries has indicated a 3.5% occurrence of Swine Brucellosis within wild hog populations and estimates nearly 80% have been exposed to Leptospirosis. These diseases are known to cause serious illness in humans and may possibly result in death.
The Hunters for the Hungry Program encourages those who handle or dress wild hogs to adhere to the following precautions:
1. Always wear rubber gloves and protective eyewear when handling wild hogs.
2. DO NOT eat, drink or use tobacco products when handling wild hogs. These actions can result in the elevated risk of exposure and contamination of bodily fluids.
3. Clean and disinfect all utensils used in handling wild hogs with hot water and bleach.
4. All wild hog meat should be cooked to at least 165° F to render it safe for consumption.
As the Hunters for the Hungry Processor Program continues to grow, we hope to revisit the ability to accept wild hog donations at a later date.
