The U.S. Fish and Wildlife has been given yet another version of an extensive conservation plan to protect the lesser prairie-chicken in our region.
Texas Parks and Wildlife has buy-in from farmers, ranchers and oil and gas to help manage the birds; dwindling population and habitat.
The latest estimates show the bird’s population diminished significantly this year by about half, most likely due to the on-going drought.
The feds are considering listing the lesser prairie-chicken as a threatened species, which would hinder ag and oil operations.
