A pet monkey reported on the loose during wildfires north of Houston has bitten a game warden.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Mike Cox said Tuesday the animal that bit Karin Apple, who suffered a puncture wound on her thumb, is one of several rhesus monkeys being sought.
Wildfires last week in Grimes, Waller and Montgomery counties forced evacuations. Cox says game officials aren’t sure if the owner released the monkeys or whether the animals somehow got loose.
Cox told The Associated Press that Apple on Sunday spotted a monkey in a tree near Plantersville and attempted to lure the animal into a cage, but she was attacked. Apple was treated and released from a hospital.
Any captured monkeys will be turned over to state animal health officials.
