A man hunting elk under a special permit in Grand Teton Park was injured by a bear Sunday morning.
The incident happened about 11:30 a.m. along the east side of the Snake River between Blacktail Ponds and Glacier View overlooks.
So far a team of investigators isn’t sure whether the bear was a black bear or grizzly or if the encounter was defensive or predatory on the part of the bear.
The 32 year-old Jackson man, whose name was not released by park officials, was carrying bear spray and followed the recommended protocols for hunting in bear country.
The hunter told rangers when he spotted the bear he dropped to the ground and covered his head. He didn’t fire any shots at the bear, and he had not killed an elk Sunday morning.
