Luminant has approached the Henderson County Commissioners Court for permission to erect a warning to keep boaters out of danger near the Forest Grove Dam north of Athens.
The dam is on Caney Creek, northwest of Athens and is a popular fishing spot. Luminant Director of Community Relations Bob Montgomery said an incident in March involving a boat that was trapped near the dam alerted the company to the potential for injury or loss of life there. The spot causing the most concern is a part of the structure of the dam where large concrete walls jut out.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department was alerted and a game warden called to rescue the boaters.
Montgomery said the close call involving the boaters alerted the power company to warn boaters in the area. The Luminant legal team and environmental team met to study the issue and decided something should be done in the interest of public safety and to reduce the company’s risk of liability.
