Fishing on Lake Conroe is fair to excellent as anglers continue to dodge weather fronts and the accompanying wind and rain. The water temperature at the dam is 54 degrees and the level of the lake is 199.5 feet. Pool is 201 feet above sea level.
The black bass fishing is fair and the bass are in shallow water, according to fishing guide Billy Mills. They can be found around the dam, riprap and other structures throughout the lake. The is the time of year for the top-water fishermen as well as spinner bait, soft plastic worms in the usual watermelon red, pumpkin and June bug and shallow- to medium-running crankbaits in baby bass and Tennessee shad. Catches of 1 to 3 pounds are the norm with some tournaments weighing in fish up to 6 pounds.
Catfish are still excellent on baited holes along submerged pond dams and creek bends from 15 to 20 feet deep. Mills said plain chicken livers or shrimp dipped in punch bait like Primo with menhaden oil mixed in are good baits. The size of the catfish is good and 2- to 3-pound fish are common. Drifting with cut bait is producing catches of large blue cats. Limits are again the usual result of any catfish trip.
Crappie fishing is spotty at best, but Mills suggested deep brush from 15 to 20 feet deep and the FM 1097 bridge. One might try jigs if the wind allows, or minnows.
Hybrids are good around the mouths of creeks and main lake humps and points. Live shad or small bream are good live baits, but trolling is working well also. During the day, they can be found by drifting live bait on ledges near drop-offs.
