Mallards are starting to show up in the state, according the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s waterfowl program leader Kevin Kraai.
Mallards are hardy ducks and their presence is good news for duck hunters.
In the Panhandle, Kraai said most of the surface water froze in the extended cold, forcing the ducks further south. Kraai said diving ducks , like scaup, redheads and canvasback, are also abundant.
Rains accompanied the cold weather and duck hunters like Bob McFarlane, who owns Big Woods on the Trinity and sells hunts, said he’s suffered through low water for several seasons and now has too much water.
“We’ve got a lot of ducks but there’s so much water that they’re scattered and hard to hunt,” said McFarlane, whose place is adjacent to the Trinity River near Palestine. “We had 20 inches of rain in 10 days.”
The North Zone duck season continues through Dec. 8.
