Owners bite pit bulls to save smaller dog

Two dog owners had to bite the necks of four Staffordshire Bull Terriers as they desperately fought to save a Border Collie held in their jaws.

The dogs belonged to former firefighter Anthony Butler and had been dangerously out of control in Berry Hill Rise, Mansfield, on March 3, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

The dogs initially escaped from Butler’s car when he arrived to walk them.

They made a beeline for a woman walking her two Border Collies, Ellie and Cassie.

The terrified owner threw herself down to fight off the dogs and was bitten on her hands, arms and side.

Butler went to help her and tried to pull the dogs off.

Jon Fountain, prosecuting, said: “These four dogs were wildly out of control and extremely strong. The struggle went on for a sufficient time – it exhausted them.”

The woman said they had to bite the scruff of the necks of the dogs as they had her pet Ellie’s throat in their jaws.

The dogs did let go and the woman made her way back to her car.

She had to pick up a stick to fight them off as they chased her to her vehicle.

At hospital later, she needed an injection in case she developed Tetanus – a serious but rare infection caused by bacteria – and treatment to bite wounds.
