TPWD Hosts Waterfowl Workshop in Athens

If you duck hunt or want to learn about the sport there is a workshop for you. Texas Parks and Wildlife is holding a waterfowl workshop for anyone who is interested in learning more about duck hunting and the proper way to do it.

“It’s like a bonding experience with nature. You get people out in the outdoors and they realize how much fun it is and how nice and natural the environment can be,” said Superintendent of Purtis Creek State Park Mendy Davis.

The workshop is free but for adults it will be $25 for the hunt. Everyone must have a hunting permit and duck stamps. The workshop is this Saturday, Dec. 14.

“We’re going to learn a little bit about duck id which is a very important part about waterfowl hunting and waterfowl biology,” said Wildlife Biologist Heidi Bailey.

State Game Wardens will talk about waterfowl laws and ethics.

“We’re going to give everyone an opportunity to shoot some skeet, we will have duck dog demonstrations so people can see how useful a dog can be, and even some distance estimated drills giving folks the opportunity to figure out how far away is not going to be a good shot to shoot a duck,” said Davis.

The first mentored hunt will be Dec. 27 or Jan. 11.

“It’s not just open to youth its open to anyone who wants to learn how to waterfowl hunt and has just never had the opportunity to learn,” said Bailey.

Davis said this hunt and workshop is part of Texas Parks and Wildlife’s mission.

“The park actually belong to the citizens of Texas. We want to make sure everyone feels comfortable and confident coming out for outdoor activities.”

If you want to sign up call the parks staff at Purtis Creek State Park. There are about 20 spots open. The first part of the workshop will be at the Texas Freshwater Fishery in Athens. And then in the afternoon, they will head over to Purtis Creek State Park.
