TPWD backs off snake gassing ban (for now)

he Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on Tuesday evening announced it was dropping its consideration of a rule that would ban the use of gasoline for flushing rattlesnakes and other animals from their dens.

A hearing for the rule in Sweetwater in Friday drew more than 200 people, most of whom voiced their opposition, citing its potential for killing the World’s Largest Rattlesnake Roundup held there each year in March.

Did Parks and Wildlife blink?

“It’s hard to know because we put every single force, every connection, everything we could do between the end of the hearing and today,” state Rep. Susan King told the Reporter-News by phone. Her District 71 includes Sweetwater’s Nolan County.

Her office received a word after 5 p.m. via a voicemail from Parks and Wildlife Executive Director Carter Smith, advising King of the change of plans.

“They said based on hearings, and I assume Sweetwater but they didn’t articulate it specifically, that they were going to make material changes to the proposed rule,” King said. “They believe that it will be ready to be brought forth in March, toward the end of the month.”
