Tagged great white “Katharine” really gets around

This shark really gets around.

A one-ton great white shark looks to be making its way back north, after yesterday making a beeline toward Canaveral National Seashore.

By 3:45 p.m. today, the shark dubbed “Katharine” was tracked back off Flagler Beach, swimming roughly 35 miles north from near Port Orange in just a day.

The shark, tagged in August off Cape Cod, Mass. by the research group Ocearch, was named in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, a Cape Cod native and songwriter, known for her poem and song “America the Beautiful.”

A “ping” is determined when Katharine’s dorsal fin breaks the ocean’s surface and sends a signal to a satellite, giving an estimated location.

At 3:56 p.m. Tuesday, Katharine was tracked southwest of her previous “ping” earlier that day, heading southwest toward Brevard County’s coastline.

In January, the 2,300-pound shark had been tracked as far south as the Kennedy Space Center, where she lingered for days several miles offshore, before heading north into Volusia County.
