The Texas State Aquarium made a big announcement on Wednesday. They are ready to move forward with with the largest expansion in the Aquariums 24-year history.
About half a million people visit the Texas State Aquarium every year. With the new expansion, another 150,000 visitors are expected to walk through the doors, making it one of the top 10 aquariums in the country.
With a gift of $3 million from HEB, the Texas State Aquarium has announced an expansion plan that will more than double its current size.
“It’s always been a dream of ours to take our visitors on a journey from the Gulf of Mexico to the Caribbean Sea, and I can now tell you we’re going to achieve that vision,” said Tom Schmid, president and CEO of the Texas State Aquarium.
It’s a vision with a $50 million price tag, half of which has already been raised.
When you walk up the ramp, the plan is to build the four-level facility to the right side of the lobby. While the new facility gets underway, the current space will be renovated to keep current and fresh.
Schmid said they hope to break ground this November and open sometime in early 2017, in time for spring break of that year.
