First two tagged redfish winners confirmed

Highlands, TX resident, Micah Nethercutt and a friend setup a few poles with bait to fish the surf at San Luis Pass to try and catch some sharks.  Unfortunately, seaweed kept getting caught on the lines.  Nethercutt decided to setup his other rod with a piece of squid and try his luck while his friends set up some lights as it was getting dark.

Nethercutt was about to reel in his line due to the surf rolling the weight along the bottom, when suddenly his line took off.  After landing the fish, he couldn’t figure out what was hanging off of its side as it was covered in algae.

Upon further inspection, Nethercutt realized the fish was a tagged redfish for the 2014 CCA STAR Tournament.  He immediately put the fish in an ice chest to keep it safe.  Needless to say, Nethercutt was too excited to fish the rest of the evening.  The following morning, Nethercutt contacted the STAR Tournament office to notify them of his catch.

The was checked in at West End Marina.

On Friday, June 27 Temple resident, Mark Richner and two of his fishing buddies booked a guided trip in Baffin Bay with fishing guide, Capt. David Rowsey. They started out the day catching some nice trout.

As the morning wore on, they worked their way back to the marina and decided to stop just south of Bird Island Basin to see if they could catch some redfish for the grill.  They worked their way towards a nice grass line.  In a matter of minutes all three anglers had nice reds, but Richner’s happened to be the one with the tag.

Richner’s redfish was checked in at Roy’s Bait & Tackle..

There are still over sixty tagged redfish still out there swimming around.  Last year eleven tagged redfish were caught, but only six anglers claimed prizes. The others, unfortunately, were not registered for the CCA Texas STAR.

Micah Nethercutt and Mark Richner each will receive a 2014 Ford F-150 Texas Edition XLT SuperCab truck, Haynie 23’ Big Foot boat, Mercury 150 L Pro XS OptiMax motor and Coastline trailer.
