Huge whale shark rescued by diver after being caught in a net (VIDEO)

FORGET what Jaws has taught you – this astonishing footage shows that sharks aren’t so scary after all.

This brave diver was forced to get up close and personal to a HUGE whale shark after its fins had become trapped in a net. This amazing video shows Arijay Prasad freeing the massive fish – only for it to then swim alongside him and his crew in a sign of gratitude. The 34-year-old was scuba-diving in the Andaman Sea off the Similan Islands near Thailand when he noticed the distressed creature.

Mr Prasad from Calcutta, India, said: “It was amazing to be so close to this wonderful creature and we just had to get closer.

“When I started to take some pictures I noticed the remnants of a net wrapped around its torso.

“The net had dug deep into its skin, causing a gaping wound on its side so we knew we had to remove it from the shark.”

The group of divers initially tried to yank the net off the terrified animal, but this only scared it.After several failed attempts and forty wasted minutes, Mr Prasad eventually freed the shark with two swift cuts of a knife. The next part of the video is perhaps the most astonishing.

Mr Prasad said: “As if it was saying thank you, the shark swam around within the entire group of divers.

“The number had significantly grown as more came in to see what was going on.

“Eventually he swam off on his own into the dark blue.”

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and are thought to have originated around 60 million years ago.

They are filter feeders who feast on plankton and small fish, meaning that they are no threat to humans.
