Watch Something That Happens to Millions of Drivers a Year but Is Rarely Caught on Camera

In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that more than 1 million car-deer collisions happen each year. Odds are you probably know someone who has hit a deer. Still, the shock and trauma of such damaging events are rarely caught on camera.

But in Russia where many have dashboard-mounted cameras, we can see and hear the reaction of a driver and passenger in the moments before and after a deer made a leap right at their windshield.

For those who have hit a deer, you probably will recognize this scene all too well. For those who have been fortunate enough to have avoided deer collisions, brace yourself:

Notice how the windshield, though broken, creates a web instead of shattering, which would have made the situation even more dangerous for the occupants inside. This type of “laminated glass” includes a layer of polyvinyl butyral between two pieces of glass to create this protective effect.

This incident happened back in June, but it’s more recently getting play around the Web.The status of the car’s occupants, who were at least heard talking after the accident, and the deer are unknown.

Between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012, car-deer collisions were estimated to have cause $4 billion in vehicle damage. Such accidents are also the result of up to 200 deaths per year in the U.S.
