The Liberator is a unique AR-pattern carbine with what Liberty Gun Works calls their “Bi-Directional Trigger” that’s tailored for people who love mag dumps.

It works like this: you pull the trigger, it shoots. You release the trigger, it shoots.

Don’t get it confused with a burst trigger or a full-auto trigger, this is not a machine gun. A machine gun is defined as any firearm that fires more than one round with one pull of the trigger. The law doesn’t say anything about releasing the trigger and the Bi-Directional Trigger abides.

This isn’t an all-new thing as tinkerers and hobbyists have been building similar triggers for personal use for some time.

The trigger has two modes, safe and Bi-Directional. It does not have a standard semi-automatic mode and as such means it’s definitely a range toy for experienced shooters.

The other part of this gun that makes it mag dump-friendly is that it’s optimized for use with the generally less-expensive 7.62x39mm cartridge. It uses a bolt following an in-house design that’s made specifically to run steel-cased ammo all day long. Liberator rifles and pistols are also available chambered for 5.56 NATO/.223 Remington.

It’s not cheap at $2,400 but with something as different as the Liberator, no one is surprised. Hopefully Liberty Gun Works will put their Bi-Directional Trigger on the market as a standalone product, but for now, they’re a package deal.

If you’re hankering for a Liberator, head over to the Liberty Gun Works.
