G2 R.I.P. 9mm Ammo (VIDEO)

Review, including two test block shots, of the 9mm G2 Research R.I.P. “Radically Invasive Projectile” ammo. Chronographed velocities are from a Glock 19, 4″ barrel. I’m using a calibrated 16″ test block from Clear Ballistics.

We personally feel that if you are every attacked by a large block of ballistics gelatin, that G2 R.I.P. ammunition is a solid choice. It may also work against extremely thin and underfed assailants.

Unfortunately, while the basic design seems to “work” mechanically as it was designed, it begins expanding almost immediately and the fragmenting “trocars” do not penetrate to what most would consider an adequate depth. You must keep in mind that the trocars penetrated only a few inches in ballistics gelatin, and did not encounter bone. Shots to the upper chest stand a high likelihood of striking bone, and it seems likely that the trocars will not penetrate deeply enough to reach vital organs. Only the base of the projectile, which leaves an icepick-type wound, penetrates adequately, though with a much smaller wound channel.

I’ll be continuing to use proven modern hollowpoints ammunition which expand to a reasonable diameter and achieve the depth needed to reach vital organs across a wide range of conditions, as proven by real world application.
