Lubbock Senator Proposes Changes to Regulation of Gun Silencers

LUBBOCK, TX — State Senator Charles Perry of Lubbock said Monday evening he will propose legislation to protect lawful owners of gun silencers from conflicting legislation.

Senate Bill 473 was filed on February 6 and gained a co-author on February 25.

It says, “A person commits an offense if the person intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures, transports, repairs, or sells any of the following items, unless the item is registered in the National Firearm Registration…”

On the list is “firearm silencer.”

“Unfortunately, gun suppressors have a bad reputation due to the mob and spy movies. In reality, suppressors should be seen like the muffler on a car.” Perry said, “In fact they were invented by the same individual.”

Perry described silencers as “a way to protect a gun owner’s ears from hearing loss.”

Perry also said, “Unfortunately, the way Texas law is written, [it] puts individuals with permits to own these items at risk.”

Perry said his bill would end the risk of conflicting state law. Silencers would still be regulated by federal law and state law would still forbid possession of such items that are not properly registered at the federal level.

Perry said, “In order to obtain a suppressor, one must go through a thorough background check and application process with the Federal Government and jump through a series of hoops.”
