More recall problems dog Honda and Acura; NHTSA investigates Nissan recall repair

It seems like only yesterday that Honda said its big recall issues were handled. Now, however, there are new difficulties on the horizon and the company has taken out full-page ads in local newspapers (like the Austin American Statesman) to tell owners that their vehicles are subject to a free repair of airbag inflators.  They will even provide a no charge rental or loaner if there is a delay in getting cars repaired.

They say, “Almost everyone knows someone who owns a Honda.  If you know a Honda or Acura driver who might own an affected vehicle, please encourage them to contact us.”

The affected models are the:

  • 2001 – 2007 Honda Accord
  • 2001 – 2005 Honda Civic
  • 2002 – 2006 Honda CR-V
  • 2003 – 2011 Honda Element
  • 2002 – 2004 Honda Odyssey
  • 2003 – 2008 Honda Pilot
  • 2006 Honda Ridgeline
  • 2003 – 2006 Acura MDX
  • 2002 – Acura TL
  • 2003 Acura CL
  • 2005 Acura RL

If you are not sure that a vehicle is affected, follow the steps below and someone will be glad to tell you if you need the repair:

  • Go to recalls.honda.com or recalls.acura.com for the respective brand vehicle
  • Call 800/999-1009 and choose option 4 for Honda; or call 800/382-2238 and choose option 4 for Acura
  • Or visit an authorized Honda or Acura dealer to have it serviced.

This is serious business so don’t neglect this even though it may have never caused a problem.  After it does, it’s too late.

Nissan faces investigation of their airbag repair recall

Federal investigators from the National Highway Safety Administration are taking a long hard look at Nissan’s March 2014 recall of almost one-million vehicles because it appears that the software may not recognize whether an adjust is sitting in the passenger seat.

The affected vehicles include:

  • 2013 – 2014 Nissan Altima
  • 2013 – 2014 Nissan Leaf
  • 2013 – 2014 Nissan Pathfinder
  • 2013 – 2014 Nissan Sentra
  • 2013 Nissan NV200
  • 2013 Infiniti JX35
  • 2014 Infiniti Q50
  • 2014 Infiniti QX60

Although there have been no reports of accidents or injuries, thus far there have been 124 complaints (most of which say the passenger airbag status light indicates that the airbag is turned off) after the repairs were completed by Nissan dealers.  Some owners say that dealers have repaired the vehicles multiple times, but the problem persists.

Initially, Nissan said the problem was due to a combination of engine vibration at idle when there was no passenger occupying the seat and then someone sits in it or sits in an unusual position.  This situation was supposed to be rectified by a software tweak and a caliper change.
