A 1,400-pound great white shark nicknamed Betsy has moved off the Louisiana coast, almost due south of Grand Isle, according to Ocearch.org.
The 12-foot, 7-inch female shark was outfitted with a special transmitter in August 2013 near Cape Cod, and has moved nearly 7,000 miles since then. The transmitter sends a ping to an overhead satellite whenever the fish’s dorsal fin breaches the surface.
Betsy has been off the Louisiana coast for at least the last 72 hours. Researchers received her latest ping Friday at 6:39 p.m.
Though the fish seems large, she’s actually immature. Great white sharks regularly weigh more than 2,500 pounds.
Generally, the fish are found in the Gulf during the winter and early spring. Great white sharks can maintain body temperature that’s warmer than their surroundings, so they seem to prefer cooler waters.
OCEARCH is a non-profit organization that researches great whites and other apex predators.
