Jaguars are the largest cat in the Americas.
You couldn’t tell that by looking at “Balam”, the baby jaguar displayed last weekend at the Ellen Trout Zoo in Lufkin.
At a whopping four pounds, the tiny jaguar excited onlookers and gave a great opportunity for zoo officials to educate the public about these great and somewhat mysterious cats.
Balam had to be removed from his mother at birth due to her lack of parenting skills.
“He is doing well and getting stronger under the excellent care provided by his keepers and when not being fed or cleaned remains in visual, auditory, and olfactory communication with one of his parents,” reported zoo officials.
Both parents are on display at the zoo and while Balam will be making appearances as possible, one of them is always out in their enclosure.
