South Texas fishing update …

All of the guides and anglers are recommending getting an early start to beat the heat.

JamesSanchez recommends trying Oso Bay for trout in knee to thigh-deep seagrass beds and potholes near deeper water. He is looking schools of baitfish early, throwing a Super Spook Jr.

Later in the day target waist deep seagrass beds along drop-offs and channel edges, using a Kelley Wiggler Ball Tail Shad in bone/diamond, Mansfield Margarita or Flamingo on a 1/8-ounce jig head.

Redfish are tailing early in the morning. Try a honey gold/chartreuse Kelly Wiggler paddletail or a 1/4-ounce weedless gold spoon.

Rockport, Aransas Bay, and northward…

Capt. Jennifer Diaz Deleon says the trout have moved to areas of the bay with oyster reefs and scattered shell at depths of 6-7 foot. Use free lined piggies or croaker.

If we have a day with low barometric pressure and a full moon, look for redfish scattered on the flats while drifting the seagrass and potholes with piggies or a gold spoon. Look for drum schooled up at about 7-10 foot depths. Use free lined live or dead shrimp.

Port Aransas/Aransas Pass…

Capt. Frankie Eicholz III says recent light winds have afforded anglers the opportunity to fish the wells of Corpus Christi Bay. Piggies are the preferred bait.

Black drum are starting to show up in the usual places around Shamrock Cove. Sight casting with dead shrimp has been working best on the drum.

Upper Laguna Madre/Baffin Bay …

Start out early targeting shallow slicks advises Capt. Cliff Webb. Use small topwater lures, if you can avoid the floating seagrass. Trout should be in the white sand pockets. Chrome and black or bone have been working well. Later, starting midmorning through midday, work the Intracoastal Waterway as well as minor channels, where fish go to escape the heat and sun.

Concenate your efforts along deep edges of channels where there is current. Capt. Webb prefers a Saltwater Assassin, Chicken on a Chain color, with a 1/4-ounce jig head. For a shot at flounder, target the sandy channel edges. The cooler, deep rocks of Baffin Bay should also be holding trout. His lure of choice: MirrOdine XL gold with a chartreuse belly.
