Coming in numerous shooting platforms with the ability for high capacity magazines and easy riggings for night vision and thermal scopes, ARS make a great and fun choice for hog hunting.

Let’s check out some of the popular and more obscure AR-friendly calibers for hogs.

7.62 X 39: This is relatively inexpensive and easy to get ammo that is known for performing well in short barrels. You can pick up a box of 124-grain bullets for less than most popular deer calibers. These are great for hogs out to around 125 yards.

.308: The .308 is a popular caliber and it’s easy to find. You can get up to 165-grain bullets that will allow you to hit hard and also have a decent effective range.

.223: A very common AR choice is the .223 and it can be effective for hogs especially when making headshots which is preferable for many hunters. Think shot placement and you’ll be fine with this caliber.

450 Bushmaster: Fairly new to the market the 450 Bushmaster is designed to deliver a wallop and while not designed to take those super long shots many hunters try these days within 200 yards this one with good shot placement will take a hog down.

Feral hogs are causing major damage throughout Texas and the American South and their range is spreading rapidly. Killing as many as possible is the solution and hunting them with an AR that is capable of allowing a hunter to possibly take multiple hogs in a single sitting is an option that benefits wildlife and landowners.

Hunting hogs is literally an act of conservation and it’s a fun one that pays off with quality meat that in the tough time we’re in can feed your family and others in need in your community.
