The fastest-growing segment in the hunter-conservationist community is women.

Ladies throughout North America are increasingly heeding the call of the wild to increase their connection to nature, provide heart-healthy venison for their families and make a difference in wildlife conservation.

The Wild Sheep Foundation (WSF) has launched its Women Hunt™ Program to help more women cross any barriers on their journey into fields and the mountains.

“I had some definite challenges getting started, and as I talk to women from all around, I hear the same things,” said WSF’s Women Hunt™ chair Renée Thornton

“I’m excited to be part of something that will help offer solutions for women who want to hunt and pursue the great outdoors,” she said.

Women Hunt ™ chair Renee Thornton on what she described as an unsuccessful but fun bear hunt in Montana. The first animal she ever harvested was a big black bear in northern Alberta.

One of those solutions is an opportunity for twelve new women hunters to experience their first hunt in a safe, comfortable, and immersive educational environment at the FTW Ranch near Barksdale, TX.

These  lucky women will only have to get their airfare to and from San Antonio.

The rest is taken care of by WSF, including WSF and sponsor swag, a Yeti 65 quart cooler to ship their meat back home in, and more.

“We want this to be an experience they will never forget,” Thornton said.

The participants will get a tour of the ranch and a chance of seeing game and learning to identify it in the field correctly.

“They will get a detailed course in game identification and in this case will be learning to distinguish whitetails from exotics as part of that. The hunt is for whitetail does and ties in with helping the ranch meet their management goals,” she said.

The ladies will go through firearms training and will have an opportunity to use Weatherby rifles to learn to shoot out to 300 yards.

“The goal is for each lady to harvest a doe, but if they are not all successful for whatever reason, the meat will be shared. Sharing our wild game is important, and we want to inspire the participants to share their game,” Thornton said.

The ladies will learn how to field dress, butcher, and cook their meat, making it a field-to-freezer event.

“We’re very excited about this program and look forward to heading to Texas to the FTW Ranch for a special experience not only for the 12 ladies but everyone involved in making it happen,” Thornton said.

Women do hunt, and more of them do so every year.

Through the Women Hunt™ program, women will learn to hunt and learn to stand for hunting and the conservation work it inspires.
