Wild Aoudad Story

The aoudad (Barbary sheep) was released for hunting purposes into Texas’ Palo Duro Canyonin the 1950s.

Now there are tens of thousands free-ranging throughout not only the Panhandle but the Trans-Pecos region. Here this fun story about the wariness of the aoudad.

  1. Introduction to the Aoudad (Barbary Sheep_
    • The Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), also known as Aoudad are  native to rocky mountains and deserts of North Africa.
    • Introduced to various regions around the world for hunting, they are known for their remarkable adaptations to arid environments and unique social behaviors.
  2. Physical Characteristics:
    • Aoudad have a distinctive appearance, with long, thick coats ranging in color from sandy brown to reddish-brown.
    • Both males and females possess impressive curved horns, though those of males are larger and more robust, often reaching lengths of up to 30 inches (76 cm).
    • Their robust build and sturdy hooves allow them to traverse rocky terrain with ease, making them well-suited to their mountainous habitats.
  3. Habitat and Range:
    • Aoudad primarily inhabit steep, rocky slopes, cliffs, and mountainous regions with sparse vegetation.
    • Originally found in the Atlas Mountains of North Africa, they have been introduced to various regions worldwide, including parts of Europe, North America, and the Middle East. They are super abundant in places like Trans Pecos Texas.
  4. Diet and Feeding Habits:
    • As herbivores, Barbary sheep graze on a variety of vegetation, including grasses, herbs, shrubs, and leaves from low-lying plants.
    • Their specialized digestive systems allow them to extract moisture from the dry vegetation found in their arid habitats, enabling them to survive in environments with limited water sources.
