In 2003 officials with Texas A&M cloned a whitetail deer. It’s name was “Dewey”.
After this a Texas rancher cloned dozens of deer according to a report from The Huffington Post that flew under the radar during the pandemic in 2021.
Krause filed the bill on behalf of Jason Abraham of Canadian, Texas, who told HuffPost he has cloned somewhere between 35 and 40 deer over the past decade. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issued a regulation forbidding deer cloning last November.
In response to the illegal cloning of a Marco Polo sheep, I reached out to Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) Big Game Program Leader Mitch Lockwood about cloning in Texas.
“TPWD does not have regulatory authority over exotic wildlife, but cloning of white-tailed deer and mule deer is prohibited,”he said.
What are your thoughts on cloning wildlife? Did you know whitetails had been cloned in Texas?
