Danger In The Dunes: A Brush With A Murderer While Fishing At High Island, TX

Under the shimmering moonlight at High Island, Texas, a father and his young son were surf fishing, their lines cast into the dark surf in pursuit of bull redfish.

They had been to this spot many times and were excited to spend time in an area where they only sounds was the waves crashing on the surf.

Suddenly, the distant roar of an engine disturbed the peace. A van approached, parking a short distance away. The two watched as a shadowy a man emerged, opened up the back of the van and pulled out a human-sized package.

The man moved with a disturbing urgency, digging feverishly in the sand. The father’s heart pounded as he realized something was terribly wrong.

“Let’s go,” he whispered to his son, pulling him closer. They hastily packed their gear, leaving behind the tranquility of the beach. Back in their truck, they drove off, a sense of dread settling over them.

In this short and scary edition of the Texas Fish & Game-sponsored Dark Outdoors, Chester Moore recounts a story told to him by the son on this trip. You can listen via the player below or subscribe and listen on IHeartradio, Apple Podcats & Spotify.

A few weeks later the front page of the local newspaper confirmed their worst fears. A serial killer had been active in the area, and the police had discovered fresh graves at High Island.

Reflecting on the ordeal, it became clear that safety and personal protection are crucial for fishermen in remote locations. Encounters with dangerous individuals are rare but real, and being prepared could mean the difference between life and death.

“Dark Outdoors is about raising awareness to situations and letting people know they need to be prepared because increasingly outdoors experiences are going dark,” Moore said of the multiple award-winning podcast.

“Our slogan is Pray. Prepare and Pack Heat. This isn’t a typical true crime show. We cover animal attacks and weird weather patterns too but it’s more than that. We don’t celebrate killers and criminals but educate people how to stay alive when you meet them.”
