I’ve tested an awful lot of boating gear through the years, and sometimes the best boat mod you make turns out to be something you didn’t expect to even like. Case in point: The Scanstrut Rokk Edge 10. It sells for under $150, takes all of 20 minutes to install, and once you have one on your boat you’ll wonder how you ever survived without it.
The Rokk Edge 10 is a wireless cell phone cradle and charger. I’m sure there are some competitive products out there which also fill this niche and brand is a lot less important than the unit’s critical features: it holds the phone securely no matter how rough it gets, it’s waterproof, and it will charge any phone through any case. These features eliminate a ton of problems. You don’t have to find somewhere secure to rest your phone. You never misplace it, or have to deal with it weighing down a pocket. It’s always charging and you don’t have to worry about the phone running out of battery. It’s right at the helm so if it rings when you’re cruising even if you don’t hear it, you’ll see it. And when someone else’s phone dies you can graciously give them a few minutes in the cradle to recharge.
I can’t speak for any other models, but with the Rokk Edge 10 my phone has never, ever come free from the cradle. Despite many different people coming aboard we have yet to find a phone it can’t charge or a case it won’t charge through. And installation required just drilling three holes, bolting the unit in place, and running positive and negative power leads to the bus bar. I’m not a huge fan of phones and when I’m out fishing I try my best to ignore them, so I never expected to find a wireless charger and cradle so dang helpful. But the bottom line is that adding it might just be the best boat mod ever.
