The Gulf of Mexico is home to some of the ocean’s most iconic billfish species, including sailfish, white marlin, and blue marlin. These majestic creatures thrive in its warm waters, making the region a prime destination for anglers seeking the thrill of the catch. Beyond the excitement, however, the conservation of these apex predators is a vital mission, one led by the Billfish Foundation (TBF).

One innovative step forward is the enhancement of TBF’s Tag & Release Application, a vital tool in billfish conservation. As the foundation explains, “We are happy to announce that 60+ Gulf of Mexico offshore oil rigs and platforms have been added as searchable location points to the Tag & Release Application.” This update simplifies the data-entry process for anglers who participate in TBF’s tagging program, a cornerstone of their research and conservation work.
Tagging allows scientists to track migration patterns, growth rates, and habitat preferences of billfish species. With this new functionality, users no longer need to manually input longitude and latitude coordinates. Instead, they can select the name of an oil rig or platform directly from the app. “Now, users can search up the platforms by name and select them as a location, rather than manually inputting longitude and latitude points,” TBF elaborated.
The Gulf of Mexico’s unique network of offshore oil rigs and platforms has long been recognized as an artificial reef system, providing critical habitat for a range of marine species, including baitfish that attract predatory billfish. By adding these platforms to their tagging application, TBF not only simplifies reporting but also encourages greater participation among anglers, fostering a deeper connection to conservation.
To ensure the system continues to meet the needs of its users, TBF invites feedback from the fishing community. “If there is an offshore rig or platform you would like added, please DM us or reach out to us at tag@billfish.org,” they urged.
For those passionate about billfish fishing, the integration of science, sport, and conservation creates a powerful synergy. Programs like TBF’s Tag & Release Application ensure that future generations can enjoy the thrill of the catch while safeguarding the ocean’s delicate ecosystems.
