Dangerous Encounters With Strange People In the Outdoors

The outdoors is a place of adventure, solitude, and sometimes… danger. While most trips into the wild are peaceful, there are times when hunters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts stumble upon something—or someone—that shouldn’t be there. Sometimes outdoors lovers encounter strange people out there.

Texas Fish & Game Editor-in-Chief Chester Moore, host of the acclaimed Dark Outdoors® podcast, is seeking game camera photos, videos, and personal accounts of dangerous and strange encounters in the wild.

Outdoors Criminals

Have you ever had a run-in with criminals while out in the backcountry? Stumbled upon cartel activity, illegal grow operations, or poachers who didn’t want to be found? Encountered someone acting erratic and dangerous, making you feel like you weren’t alone—or safe?

These stories are crucial in raising awareness about real-world threats in the great outdoors. If you’ve had an encounter, you’re not alone, and sharing your experience can help others stay safe.

Strange Survivalists? Surviving Tribe?

One topic Chester is particularly interested in is the unsettling phenomenon discussed in a recent Dark Outdoors® episode:
Strange Tales of a Hidden TX Tribe & Dangerous Encounters with Feral Humans

For years, rumors have swirled about a hidden, primitive tribe living deep in the Texas wilderness as documented by the late author Rob Riggs. Some believe these individuals have been surviving completely off the grid for generations, avoiding civilization at all costs. Some of these reports centered between the Old and Lost River, Trinity Basin and Big Thicket  existed at least until the 1980s.

Email cmoore@fishgame.com if you’ve heard these stories or had encounters.

Moore questions whether these were indeed hidden people or some kind of strange survival group or anti-social group that wanted to live in a primitive way.

Have you ever encountered something like this? A shadowy figure lurking in the woods, someone appearing unexpectedly in a place where no one should be, or worse—an aggressive encounter deep in the backcountry?

If you have any stories, game camera footage, or videos related to these topics, send them in! Your contributions could be featured in a future article or discussed on Dark Outdoors® to help raise awareness of these very real dangers.
