The commercial harvest of king mackerel has closed in federal waters of the Gulf Southern Zone.
What/When:
- Commercial gillnet harvest of king mackerel in federal waters of the Gulf Southern Zone closec at 12 p.m., local time, on March 20, 2025.
- Commercial king mackerel gillnet harvest will reopen at 6:00 a.m., (local time) on January 20, 2026.
- The Gulf Southern Zone includes federal waters off Collier and Monroe Counties, Florida (see map).
Why This Closure Is Happening:
- The 2024/2025 commercial quota for the southern zone gillnet component is 671,328 pounds.
- Updated landings data indicate that commercial gillnet harvest of king mackerel has harvested 672,523 pounds.
- In accordance with the regulations, NOAA Fisheries is required to close this component of the fishery when the quota has been met or projected to be met. The closure is needed to prevent overfishing (too many fish being harvested).
- Preliminary estimates indicate a slight overage of the gillnet component quota (1,195 pounds). If final estimates still indicate an overage, the amount of that overage will be deducted from the 2026 southern gillnet component quota.
