The Most Unusual Ways to Catch Fish

FISHING IS AN ACTIVITY that appeared millions of years ago. For a long time, it was used to obtain food and helped many people survive. Today, fishing is mainly a hobby that many people like. In addition to traditional fish-catching methods, unusual methods are sometimes used. They diversify the process and provide an opportunity to have fun. In some cases, using such methods helps maintain centuries-old traditions and pay tribute to ancestors. Below are the most unusual ways to catch fish that every fishing fan should try.

Noodling

This method of fishing was invented many years ago in the United States. It is still prevalent in the country’s south and has many variations. Most often, noodling is used to catch catfish and other large species. It does not involve using any fishing equipment, so you only need your hands to catch fish. The whole process begins with finding a suitable place for noodling. It is chosen depending on the species you want to see. For example, a section of the river (less than 1 meter deep) with an uneven bottom and plenty of vegetation is ideal for catching catfish. Having found such a place, the fisherman must wait until evening (it is best to start fishing a couple of dozen minutes before sunset), put his hand in one of the depressions on the bottom and make the fish believe that the fingers are prey. When the predator tries to swallow them, you must grab it and pull it onto dry land. After completing fishing, it will most likely be dark outside. Therefore, you can take superior night vision weapon sights and end the day with an exciting hunt.

Skarping

This unusual way of fishing was invented in the USA in the 1960s of the last century. It appeared due to the rapid increase in the population of Asian carp, which invaded most of the reservoirs of the Midwestern. This fish partially or wholly destroyed many aquatic inhabitants and became the leading cause of adverse changes in local ecosystems. To combat the pest, they began to use a fishing method called skarping. It involves the use of boats with loud motors. Their sound, as well as the vibrations created in the water, scare the Asian carp, and it begins to jump out of the water to a height of up to 2 meters. Currently, fishermen on boats, jet skis, or even water skis use nets to catch fish until they are back in the water. In some states, skarping has long become a favorite type of fishing. Its popularity has allowed the creation of various competitions where you can have fun and catch much fish.

Handlining

This unusual way of catching fish appeared many centuries ago. Before people invented the fishing rod, it was the most popular, but today, it is used only by fans of exotic fishing. For handlining, fishermen use a fishing line wound on a hand reel with a hook attached to the end. They fix the bait on it and throw it into the water. Then everything happens the same as in fishing with a rod. The caught fish is pulled out onto land, after which the process is repeated. Such an unusual way of fishing gives only a tiny chance of success. To increase it a little, effective baits are used. In some cases, to make fishing similar to the one carried out many centuries ago, fishermen replace the fishing line with a rope woven from some plant material, and the hook is made from animal bones, shells, and hardwood.

Cormorant fishing

One of the more unique methods of fishing is still traditional in some Asian countries. The first mentions of this type of fishing appeared in the 7th century BC. Despite the centuries-old history, today, some Asians fish in the same way as many years ago. The principle of this type of fishing is to use cormorants, raised at home or caught in the wild. Fishermen tie a unique loop around the bird’s neck. It does not prevent them from moving but does not allow them to swallow the caught fish. Hungry cormorants are tied to a boat and put on the water during fishing. After that, they begin to look for food. When the fisherman notices that the bird has caught food, it is pulled to the boat; the fish is removed and the bird is rereleased into the water. As a result, one cormorant can catch 10-15 fish in a couple of hours.

Fishing with a fish wheel

This ancient method allows you to catch a large number of fish. It involves using the so-called “fish wheel”, which looks like a water mill wheel. It is supplemented with special nets or baskets for collecting fish. Fishing begins in the morning when the wheel blades are immersed in water. The current causes the entire structure to rotate, which causes much water, floating vegetation, and fish to enter the nets/baskets. Getting out of the trap becomes almost impossible, so the fisherman takes his catch in the evening. This method is an effective way to catch many fish, and for this reason is banned in many countries. However, such fishing remains popular in some places and will enable you to catch fish unusually.

People have come up with hundreds of methods to catch fish. Many of them have become popular in different countries around the world, and today, they are used daily by hundreds of thousands of fishermen. However, in addition to them, there are several unusual fishing methods. They are all different from each other, but they allow you to achieve a positive result. By using them today, fishermen pay tribute to their ancestors, gain new experiences and have a good time in the fresh air.
