LOWER COST FOCUS—Baffin Bay

BAFFIN BAY

Abundant Daylight & Croakers!

LONGER DAYS, warmer weather and croaker season make this my favorite time of year! With the summertime season in full swing, we no longer have to battle and base fishing patterns off of unpredictable cold fronts that drastically shift temperatures and wind direction. Although we may have the occasional Gulf storm to contend with, we are able to gather more insight on the trout routines with more consistent weather conditions.

In May, we are experimenting with several different techniques and locations to establish where the fish are more predominantly gathering and feeding. We are fishing grass lines, drop-offs and hitting all the rock structures we can in the time we have. For the groups that do not mind a little bit of a run, we are occasionally heading into the Laguna Madre and Land Cut. This allows me to get a better idea of what areas are producing and which areas are not, while still allowing customers to have a nice experience and catch fish. There will be days in early May where we must move ten or twelve times while we try and lock them down. This movement is because we are switching over from lures and live shrimp to croaker as the bait of choice. With that said, we still will throw lures at the customer’s request. When we are lure fishing, I highly suggest making it a wade fishing trip. The colors and tails I suggest throwing depend greatly on the sunlight, water clarity, grass, and bottom along with water depth.

On wade fishing days, I like to utilize the southernmost shoreline of Baffin Bay as it has a nice bottom. However, there are a few times I will head into the Laguna Madre and fish around certain spoil islands that I have found impressive fish on over the years.

For anglers that do not mind a challenge, I have had success on hot days wade fishing the quicksand like mud Baffin offers. These areas have proven to hold some thick shouldered and heavier fish when the temperature gets high. However, this is a task that takes work, endurance, and strength as the suction of the mud is not for the average person.

Regardless of your fishing method, this is a great time of year to get out on the water in Baffin Bay. With the beautiful weather it is a great time to get family and friends together and enjoy quality time while making memories you will never forget.
