The American badger (Taxidea taxus) is a native mammal found throughout much of Texas, including the coastal regions. While they are generally elusive and nocturnal, sightings have been documented across the state, including on Padre Island.

Distribution in Texas
American badgers inhabit a wide range across Texas, excluding the far eastern Pineywoods region. They are most prevalent in the western and southern parts of the state, favoring open areas with sandy soils that facilitate digging for prey such as rodents and reptiles. Their presence extends to coastal areas like Padre Island, where suitable habitat conditions exist.
Badger Sightings on Padre Island
In August 2023, a rare daytime sighting of a badger was reported on Padre Island National Seashore. A beachgoer observed the animal digging in the sand, likely in search of food. Such sightings are uncommon due to the badger’s typically nocturnal and solitary nature. However, environmental factors like drought may influence their behavior, leading to increased daytime activity
This sighting underscores the adaptability of badgers and their ability to inhabit diverse environments across Texas, including coastal regions like Padre Island.
