When Texas coastal anglers discuss trout, they almost always mean speckled trout (Cynoscion nebulosus). However, another member of the drum family quietly shares many of the same waters: the sand trout (Cynoscion arenarius). While typically smaller and less targeted than specks, sand trout have proven capable of reaching surprising sizes that many anglers may not realize.
In February 2021, FishGame.com reported on a remarkable sand trout catch that weighed an estimated 11 pounds. Although not officially recognized as a world record, this fish gained considerable attention along the Gulf Coast due to its sheer size and rarity. Most sand trout encountered by anglers typically weigh between 0.5 and two pounds, with lengths averaging 8 to 12 inches.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the only sand trout to reach such impressive proportions. The Louisiana state record, caught back in 1973, also stands at 11 pounds. In Texas, the official state record is 6.5 pounds, a fish caught over 50 years ago. Additionally, other reports from the Texas coast have documented sandies weighing over five pounds. While these larger fish are rare, they serve as a reminder that the species is capable of far exceeding their usual size under the right conditions.
These fish inhabit bays, estuaries, and nearshore Gulf waters, often frequenting the same areas as speckled trout and other popular sport fish. They lack the distinctive black spots of speckled trout, displaying a more uniform silver or pale yellow color. Although they aren’t typically targeted as trophy fish, sand trout are prized for their abundance, willingness to bite, and excellent quality as table fare.
We’d like to hear from anglers who have encountered large sand trout. If you’ve caught a sand trout weighing five pounds or more, please send us a photo along with the details of your catch. Your submission could help add to the growing record of these surprisingly robust fish.
