Feature Article: Top Notch Hunting

TF&G Profile Series: Larry Weishuhn and Lou Marullo

Feature Article by TF&G Staff

FOR DECADES, LOU MARULLO has guided tens of thousands of Texans through the intricacies of hunting and bowhunting. He’s not only Texas Fish & Game’s Hunting Editor, but also a master bowhunter-education instructor, deeply committed to hunter safety and education.

Marullo’s column, Bare Bones Hunting, brims with practical tips, sharp wit, and genuine enthusiasm. One memorable piece declares, “Oh, the fishing season is most definitely in high gear but for those who like to pull a trigger or a bow string, hunting season never ends.”

In the offseason, he chronicles summer pursuits—hog-dogging, shed-hunting and scouting for exotics with the same energy as traditional autumn deer chases or one of his favorite pursuits – turkey hunting.

He’s openly confessed to owning “an abundance of tree stands,” turkey calls, camo gear, and boots.

What resonates throughout his columns is his blend of honesty, playful self-deprecation, and unwavering love for the outdoors. Whether testing new gear, writing about blind setups, or detailing summer hog hunts, Marullo’s work is rooted in lived experience and true hunter passion.

Marullo has always been popular with TF&G readers. Some of the comments we’ve gotten over the years include:

• I feel like Lou Marullo is my hunting mentor. I’m always learning practical tips.

• He always teaches me something and makes me laugh.

• You can tell when a guy really likes it and it’s obvious he’s really a hunter.”

He is author and narrator of the e-book String Theory for Bowhunting and while he hunts with rifle and shotgun when necessary, he always prefers the bow.

If Marullo is the voice of education and gear-tested enthusiasm, Larry Weishuhn is the heart of whitetail management. Known widely as “Mr. Whitetail,” Weishuhn brings a lifetime of hands‑on wildlife biology and ethical deer hunting to Texas Fish & Game’s Texas Whitetails column.

A Texas A&M‑trained wildlife scientist, he began publishing in the 1970s and later served as a TPWD technical assistance biologist. He’s also co-founder of the Texas Wildlife Association and established Quality Management, Ltd., helping restore and manage wildlife habitat across millions of acres.

Weishuhn’s knowledge of whitetails extends beyond hunting as he is a huge advocate for deer nutrition and management.

Beyond print, Weishuhn writes books, serves as a field editor for major hunting publications, and appears regularly on radio and TV— including “Campfire Talk” and “A Sportsman’s Life.” His ethical stance is clear when he says, “We need to be mindful of the impression we leave… we owe that respect to the animals we shoot.”

He has had a long-standing relationship with the Dallas Safari Club Foundation and invests much time in promoting hunter advocacy and conservation.

Between Lou Marullo’s gear‑tested energy and years of bowhunter safety instruction, and Larry Weishuhn’s legendary whitetail knowledge, ethical advocacy, and habitat management, Texas Fish & Game readers enjoy a strong  mix of education, passion, and conservation.
