Try This For Specks On Piers

Catching speckled trout – specks  – from piers in Texas is a mix of timing, tide, technique, and patience. The coast offers numerous public piers—places like Galveston, Port Aransas, and Corpus Christi—where locals and traveling anglers alike try their luck, especially during the warm months when trout push closer to shore.

The bite tends to come best during low-light hours: dawn and dusk. Specks are ambush predators and feel more confident in low light or when baitfish are forced into narrow spaces by the tide. So if you’re walking out onto a pier in the early morning, coffee in hand and a light breeze cutting through the salt air, you’re doing it right.

Live shrimp is a go-to bait for specks. Under a popping cork, it mimics the frantic movement of a fleeing shrimp, which is what hungry trout look for. Cast it near lighted areas (at night) or just beyond shadow lines during the day. If the water’s moving, especially an incoming tide you’re more likely to find feeding fish.

If you’re not fishing bait, soft plastics like shrimp imitations, paddletails or jerk shads on 1/8 or 1/4 oz jigheads can do the trick. Retrieve them with a rhythmic twitch-pause-twitch, letting them flutter down like injured baitfish. Pier pilings often attract bait, and where there’s bait, there may be trout lurking.

When the bite comes, it may be a light tap or a sharp thump. Don’t set the hook like you’re bass fishing for specks but tighten the line and reel smoothly. The key is to keep tension steady and guide the fish to the net or drop net (many piers have them for lifting fish).

Pier fishing is a fun tradition. Locals know the tides, the moon phase, and even which planks creak underfoot. But it’s also friendly to newcomers. Bring a light spinning setup, medium line, a bucket, and a lot patience. The trout, eventually, will come.
